Cargill France’s contribution to the economy in the Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions

At the end of 2007, Cargill France employed an independent business consultant, Katalyse, to carry out an impact study of our four sites in the Brittany and Pays de la Loire regions, taking into account the economic, social and environmental aspects. The presence of Cargill’s farming subsidiary in the region, forms the backbone of the economy in this part of North West France, and this includes our port activities and logistics activities (e.g. 10% of the non-energy traffic at the port of St Nazaire). In total, around 10 500 employees (direct, indirect and incidental) and more than 300 subcontractors and suppliers, depend on Cargill’s activities in this area of France. With regard to the future of the milling plant at Montoir, it will be fully operational by the end of 2008/beginning of 2009, and it is estimated that the impact of this will create an additional 4 000 indirect employees. Cargill plays an essential role in the economic development of oilseed products in these regions. The volume currently purchased represents at least 60% of oilseed production in the Pays de la Loire (85 to 90% of sunflower oil production and 50% rapeseed oil production). The volume of sales for retreated oilseed products (meal and oil destined for animal feed), meets 40% of French requirements.
