The peat bog at Baupte: a site being rehabilitated - or how nature is reclaiming its rights

The site at Baupte began producing peat briquettes in 1941. In fact, when coal was scarce during the Second World War, peat was used for heating.

The peat bog, which has accumulated a millimetre of peat deposit every year for 10 000 years since the last ice age during the quaternary period, is also used to produce steam and electricity. In 1947 the quarry covered over 400 hectares of the Gorges marsh. However, by the beginning of the 1950s coal had replaced peat in furnaces. Demand fell and the production of briquettes ceased. Cargill Meats Europe’s carbon footprint

The Bilan Carbone™ (carbon footprint) method, as defined by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME), has allowed Cargill Meats Europe at Orleans to record their greenhouse gas emissions and to arrive at a precise calculation of the direct and indirect emissions generated by their activities. Cargill Meats Europe is the first of Cargill’s Business Units in Europe to have taken this initiative in 2007. To ensure rigorous monitoring, the team at Orleans developed a method of evaluating its activities with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout its poultry production activities, from the hatchery stages, feed factories, farms, abattoirs and butchery workshops through to the creation of the end product.
